BLU-RAY WATCH
Had a look at Warner's new release of Menahem Golan's Over The Top (1987) in North America on Blu-ray (MGM handle this film in the UK). Possibly the first Golan/Globus/Cannon film on Blu-ray? Underwhelming, would be the best word for this transfer. I think there's a very slight fault too with the image height. Anyway, it's got an English and French audio track with subtitles. And a trailer. That's it.
Always loved the music from the film but wasn't keen on Stallone or the sprog Mendenhall's performances.

WARNER TO BUY MGM?
|
I see Warner have offered to buy what's left of MGM Inc. This would certainly be good news for Cannon fans as it would I assume solve many of the rights' issues with Warner/MGM/Cannon.
Warner already owns some Cannon (and a lot of former MGM through their purchase of Turner) back catalogue of course with Cobra (1986) being the main film with other titles including Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987).
I've never understood why Warner didn't buy MGM as they've had several opportunities. Always looked to be a great match.

MICKEY'S 2ND HAND ROLLS ROYCE
I came by an excellent 10 minute documentary on Menahem Golan from Canal+ TV in France.
Watch it @ www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V0KC8zekB8
Not very good quality video but it's an excellent watch as it gives you a flavour of the man's love for making films. All that the man's ever wanted obviously. A filmmaker.
He takes a poke (still, rightly in my opinion) at Godard and has a few funny stories.
His comments about Cannon's banker, Crédit Lyonnais, are somewhat rose-tinted and the facts of that have been smoothed out and airbrushed by time and memory. Such is one of the pleasures of old age.

THE TRILOGY?
There's an excellent Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers interview over @ The Black Hollywood File where he discusses his work in the Breakdance movies and the intended third instalment.

UNOFFICIAL
I see The Cannon Group Inc has popped up on the website Facebook. I'd just like to say that that has no connection to this site or me -except both have been set up by fans of the company of course.
Great quote on there:
Thomas wrote at 20:27 on 09 September 2009 "I use to work for a distribution company who bought the office furniture that Menahem Golan used and one of those was a very nice mahogany or Oak desk that had a very interesting design...It is now owned by Moshe and Simon Bibiyan".
And I spied an interesting poster with the MGM and Golan-Globus's Noah Films logo:

Something to do with Menahem Golan's Kazablan which MGM released in the USA in 1974.
Never managed to register on the site and I see there's someone called Menahem Golan www.facebook.com/menahemgolan Can't say if that's the real one or not.

IMDb A-Z
Trailer www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUXaIzv7z8Q -no sign of "Cannon" on that but it's got an American voiceover and is rated "PG". I assume then, this is the USA trailer.
No shortage of DVDs. Optimum Home Entertainment (UK), StudioCanal (UK) & Image Entertainment (USA).
This looks to be with Vivendi Universal (owners of Studio-Canal/Optimum) who own most of the former Cannon Screen Entertainment/British Lion back catalogue.
With this feature, Amicus Studios (a British production company founded merely to cash in on the huge success of contemporary competitor Hammer, though with lower budgets and mainly specializing in anthology films) attempted to present its very own adaptation of the legendary and numerously retold novel "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", by Robert Louis Stevenson. However, "I, Monster" turned out to be a rather curious movie and I honestly can't say for sure what it was that Amicus wanted to achieve and whether or not they succeeded in their effort. At first I assumed "I, Monster" was going to be only loosely inspired by the classic story, since there already are so many reminiscent versions available on the market and even more so because the screenplay changes the names of the protagonist from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde into Dr. Marlowe and Mr. Blake. But then it rapidly becomes obvious that this is actually one of the faithful adaptations of Stevenson's story, so that can't be an option.
Lee and Cushing don't deliver their greatest performances here (far from it actually), but even at their most mediocre they nonetheless remain a joy to behold. Lee stars as Dr. Marlowe, a successful psychiatrist and devoted disciple of Sigmund Freud's theories. He firmly believes that mental illnesses can be caused by the repression of the true human nature (which is vile, mean and aggressive) and that both sides of the personality can easily be separated. He develops a drug, experiments on himself and gradually turns into a more relentless and incurable monster after each injection. His friends, including Peter Cushing as his attorney, want to help Dr. Marlowe but they automatically assume this mysterious Mr. Blake is an entirely different persona. The overall story is commonly known and this version doesn't feature any noteworthy differences. The doctor's transformations - mentally as well as physically - grow more monstrous, but the remarkable thing is he is the scariest during the earliest phases! Near the film's climax, Christopher Lee looks unrecognizable and heavily deformed but after the first couple of drug dosages he simply puts on a menacing and genuinely unsettling Joker-type of smile. Can you imagine Christopher Lee with a big smile like that? Now, THAT is scary stuff!

KATHERINE'S INTRO
I watched Guess What We Learned in School Today? (1971) yesterday. Very strange project from Dennis Friedland and Christopher C. Dewey's Cannon Productions. I got the feeling whilst watching it that it was decades ahead of its time -or maybe it was a film made on a very tight budget. What really caught my attention was a fascinating introduction which was voiced by the director's -John G. Avildsen- daughter, Katherine www.youtube.com/watch?v=Izl1pRewEUk
click for larger
Cannon released this at least twice over a 3 year period, the abridged title of "Guess What" being the later version from 1972-73.

THE NEW YORK TIMES May 20, 1971 Screen: 'Guess What We Learned . . .':Avildsen's Work Boils Stereotype Enemies Two Suburban Families Fight Sex Education By ROGER GREENSPUN
When John G. Avildsen's "Joe" opened last year, some critics detected a certain ambiguity in the quality of its contempt for its hardhat hero. In "Guess What We Learned in School Today?," an earlier Avildsen that opened yesterday at the Loew's Cine, there is no such ambiguity, merely stupid hatred, but there are ineptitudes and unrewarding obscurities enough to sink the movie.
Deep inside "Guess What We Learned in School Today?" is a burlesque horror story about two suburban husbands, Roger Manley and Lance Battle, who fight to maintain their families' purity and the American Way of Life against the evil incursions of pot, Communism and the carnal knowledge to be unleashed should be education be taught in the local schools by one Dr. Lily Whitehorn.
As you will have noticed, the film makes rather a thing of its personal names, and since Manley learns to his own distaste that he is homosexual and Battle has for the last 10 years been impotent, the irony sits heavy on each identification. Lily Whitehorn, a lanky spinster speaking truth, betrays herself only by an occasional Freudian slip ("wildly" for "widely") into the kind of movie "Guess What We Learned in School Today?" should have been content to remain.
The movie it keeps trying to be, however, is an amalgam of social satire and sane sex propaganda and it succeeds with neither. It attacks mostly easy enemies (uptight cops, super patriots, militarism, brand names, etc.) and it defends nothing at all except good appetites and therapeutic pornography.
This is where I feel a certain doubleness of intention in "Guess What We Learned in School Today?" For where it ambitiously produces everything it despises (Lance and Roger have elaborate on-screen fantasies and a whole slew of playable character quirks), it scarcely presents what it admires and time and again it comes to look like a series of blackout skits from the more inhibited edges of an exploitation movie.
Because I happen to like some exploitation movies and to deplore the pious simplicities of this film, I can salvage from it only the memory of a few good women who might have been put to better use: Rosella Olson (Mrs. Manley) for her fine body, Jane MacLeod (Mrs. Battle) for her plump and pretty face, and Yvonne McCall (Dr. Whitehorn), whose fantastic freckles and big wide grin constitute the only real point of attraction in "Guess What We Learned in School Today?"
The Cast GUESS WHAT WE LEARNED IN SCHOOL TODAY?, directed by John G. Avildsen; written by Eugene Price, from a story by Mr. Price and Mr. Avildsen; photographed by Mr. Avildsen; music by Harper Mac Kay; produced by David Gil; released by Cannon Films. At Loem's Cine, Third Avenue at 86th Street. Running time: 96 minutes. (The Motion Picture Association of America's Production Code and Rating Administration classifies this film: "R—restricted, under 17 requires acompanying parent or adult guardian.") Roger Manley . . . . . Richard Carballo Robbie Battle . . . . . Devin Goldenberg Lance Battle . . . . . Zachary Haines Rita Battle . . . . . Jane MacLeod Dr. Lily Whitehorn . . . . . Yvonne McCall Eve Manley . . . . . Rosella Olson Lydia . . . . . Diana Moore

CRAZY LEGS!
A few scans from an old issue of the UK magazine FILMS:
click for larger
I'm not sure why Cannon went for the late UK name change (even the the trailers below feature both names -France went for something a bit strange) to Breakdance: The Movie (1984) rather than the North American Breakin' (1984) but it did allow for the ":The Movie" addition which I suppose stops people from thinking it's not an err.. movie.
No shortage of DVD releases for this all over the world. The UK has had several under both "Breakin'" and "Breakdance".
click for larger
There's a new April 2009 release from Second Sight Films Ltd with the original name as below. North American still has "Breakdance" and Australia has "Breakdance" too.
www.secondsightfilms.co.uk/cat.php?a=52&p=0
OFFICIAL SECOND SIGHT PRESS RELEASE:
Twenty five years after its original release Breakdance: The Movie is without a doubt still the original and best breakdance film: a movie inspired by a street movement that went on to spread the craze wider and further than anyone anticipated.
Now, get out your lino, stick on your ghetto blaster and don your cap as Breakdance and its sequel Breakdance 2: Electric Boogaloo spin on to DVD courtesy of Second Sight.
The freshest DVDs of 2009 will be released in their full widescreen glory for the first time in the UK on 6 April 2009.
Breakdance was a genuine phenomenon, an independent film that grew out of the nascent hip hop craze that was sweeping across both sides of the Atlantic and went on to bring it to an even wider audience.
Directed by Joel Silberg, Breakdance: The Movie sees dance student Kelly (Lucinda Dickey) becoming disillusioned with her dance teachers, and when she meets street dancers Turbo (Adolpho Quinones) and Ozone (Michael Chambers), she realises that breakdancing is where it's at.
Breakdance 2: Electric Boogaloo sees Turbo, Ozone and Kelly take on a developer who wants to demolish the local youth centre, so they plan a huge street fundraiser to showcase what they do best, Breakdancing!
As well as introducing scores of teens in the US and UK to the dancing, the moves, the music and the clothes that characterised breakdancing, bodypopping and hip hop in general, Breakdance also brought fledgling rapper Ice T to a wider audience for the first time ever.
With a thumping soundtrack including the top 10 hit There's No Stopping Us by Ollie & Jerry and Rufus and Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody, Breakdance will have you doing windmills, crazy legs and headspins in no time.
Limited interviews available with Adolpho Quinones and Michael Chambers.

CANNON: LIQUIDATED
Yes, just a few months ago we saw the final nail in the coffin for the Cannon name in the UK. Full details: www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/59032/notices/787462/all=cannon+group
Liquidation: In law, liquidation refers to the process by which a company (or part of a company) is brought to an end, and the assets and property of the company redistributed. Liquidation can also be referred to as winding-up or dissolution, although dissolution technically refers to the last stage of liquidation. The process of liquidation also arises when customs, an authority or agency in a country responsible for collecting and safeguarding customs duties, determines the final computation or ascertainment of the duties or drawback accruing on an entry. Liquidation may either be compulsory (sometimes referred to as a creditors' liquidation) or voluntary (sometimes referred to as a shareholders' liquidation, although some voluntary liquidations are controlled by the creditors, see below) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidated
Not particulalry interesting but it certainly kills off the repeated nonsense I read that the Cannon Group Inc went "bankrupt". Massive out of control unpaid debts, criminal investigations and allegations, fleeing from justice, suspicious office fires -maybe, maybe not -definitely the abomination that is Superman 4 -but not bankruptcy.
So, Cannon is no longer a legal entity here but at least we have the memories :p

THE ORGANIZATION (1971)

Never heard of "Cannon Organization" before. Sounds rather intimidating. Excellent picture from 1971. Note Joe (1970) on the wall to the right. A film which -no doubt- made Cannon as a company and name. "Zora" which had a very late name change to Silent Night, Bloody Night (1974) gets a mention also. "Jules Bricken's "Explosion" seems to have ended up at AIP and I've not found any further connection with Cannon.
Ernest Sands is mentioned in that article. If you have info on

MASS TORTS -UPDATE
Moshe Zingel's been torting again. I mentioned a few weeks back that the Cannon Movie Tale Snow White (1987) had run in to some legal problems on DVD and had been withdrawn in North America (I've had people asking where they can get the DVD).
Mr Zingel has some sworn oaths by Menahem Golan on this very subject here There's another oath too on the Cannon Classic The Apple (1980) here and here I wasn't aware music rights were so different in releasing countries which is why I assume many Cannon films have releases in certain countries but not others.
Artists have to protect their rights as it's their livelihood of course.
Music was always important for the Cannon Group Inc -even before Golan-Globus were on the scene:
I think Golan-Globus knew it would be worthwhile securing music publishing rights in their films.
