One of the causes that rapidly deteriorates the roof is the accumulation of garbage. At least once every three or four months, we must clean or sweep the roofs. More often, if near home we have tall trees that drop their leaves and other organic remains. It’s necessary to know how to fix a leaking roof so your home doesn’t get damages.
Detect the area of leaks
The home site where you have the problem of leak or moisture is what you should prioritize.
The bathrooms, the kitchen, the bedrooms?
Once the problem is identified inside the house, we must go up to the roof and investigate the origin. It probably has a crack or cracks.
If the roof is made of tiles, they could be displaced or broken. Or maybe you have leaked for damage to the connections because the putty has deteriorated.
How to fix a leak if the roof has cracks or cracks
Step 1. Spray the roof with water. Then prepare a mixture that should be thick like a baby porridge and that includes cement, a sealer, and water. In any building materials store, you can advise which are the best options of liquid sealant to waterproof roofs.
Step 2. Make the mixture to seal or cover cracks. You need a 20-liter bucket that fills up with half the water. Use 3 liters of sealant and 4 kilograms of gray cement.
Step 3. Distribute the mixture. Once the sealing mix is made, you should distribute it evenly with a broom over the entire roof surface. If it is only in small areas, a brush is enough to spread it.
Step 4. Wait for everything to dry. It will take about 12 hours.
The good thing about this mixture is that it will penetrate through the crack and seal in depth. Say goodbye to the leaks!
How to fix a leak if the roof has damaged tiles or sheets
Step 1. Check where the drip is coming from. Leaks can appear a few centimeters higher than where the leak falls in the case of roofs with a certain inclination.
Step 2. Detect if there are broken or detached tiles. It is easy. Just touch them and pull with half strength of them, if you see that it moves … it’s that. Once located, they must be removed.
Step 3. Waterproof. Under the repeated tile it is likely that you will discover fissures. It is necessary to put a special waterproofing that you recommend in a construction store.
Step 4. Place the tiles. Above the waterproofing, place the new or repaired tile. Verify that it is in place and fit with the others before fixing it with cement.
Step 5. Review joints and seal them. The most vulnerable areas on roofs are those where antennas, skylights, ventilation systems and other applications that carry putty are combined. The putty deteriorates with time and it is necessary to reinforce it. Remove the old putty with a spatula and spread the new putty with an applicator.
When performing these tasks, take precautionary measures: gloves, non-slip rubber shoes, appropriate long-sleeved clothing that protects you from the sun, a ladder and safety ropes.
Fix leaks can be an adventure that will empower you in the tasks of construction and DIY; but if you think you need help or just prefer a more comfortable and professional option, leave it to your insurance.
