FEBRUARY 2008 (see menu for older news)

I’m still looking for people to send me stuff (from anywhere in the world) so don’t be shy! See the Contact Me page on the main menu

I’m always looking for scans of covers, posters, press kits, newspaper articles or anything you think other people would like to read or look at about Cannon.

HOUSE OF THE LONG SHADOWS -TRAILER

House of the Long Shadows (1983)

Finally found a full trailer for this film. It's got a great voiceover from Vincent Price -just listen right to the end. Trailer on YouTube here

I was asked the other day where the Cannon logo came from. I’ve always assumed it was made up of a  “C” and a “D” (from original Cannon

owner Christopher C. Dewey) but I have no evidence of that (not even sure where I got it from, now). Anyone know for sure? Let me know.

It’s a shame the people who design these things are never noted. Dewey still (AFAIK) seems to be around so maybe someone can ask him?

RUNAWAY TRAIN –NEW UK DVD MARCH 2008

Andrei Konchalovsk’s great thriller with Jon Voight, Eric Roberts & Rebecca De Mornay

The previous UK DVD was with AnchorBay (and under their BayView label) but the rights have now moved to Arrow. A lot of people think this is an MGM film but from the

information I’ve found it was part of a deal sold off just before the Cannon Group merged with MGM. MGM still own the North American home video rights.

I see the UK censor has decided the new release can be seen by 15 year olds now. Very kind of them.

Watch the Runaway Train (1985)  train on YouTube here and don’t forget to checkout my Runaway Train page under Great Cannon Films.

NATURE OF THE BEAST  (1988)

click for larger image

This is another of the Cannon controlled films from around 1988 that seemed to have fallen off the earth to obsucurity until very recently.

I assume based on the novel by Franes Fyfield Recently released on DVD in Australia (correct picture but they have the wrong info. The

info seems mixed up on many sites including the distributor’s –I’ll drop them an email).

Cannon controlled part of the Granada/FilmFour/Zenith/British Screen catalogue and released it on Cannon Video, an example being Joyriders (1988)

Was Nature of The Beast (1988) released by Cannon on video? If you have any info please let me know. Thanks.

Directed by Franco Rosso

Stars Lynton Dearden, Paul Simpson, Tony Melody

ANOTHER KNOWN UNKNOWN CINEMA

“There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things

…back to reality:

John has emailed and identified the Cannon Cinema known as Unknown 3 –It’s the Brighton Cannon. Thanks John!

CANNON T-SHIRT SURVIVES CAR WRECK!

Had a really nice email from the producer, Mark Terry (wearing the Cannon t-shirt) with a few memories of Cannon from the city of of angels. I’ll post what he said (Mark’s OK with that, checked):

I grew up watching Cannon films.  Being around the business and dealing with a lot of stunt guys and crew folks, I always meet people who worked for Cannon and the stories are great.

Few of the names of people I have met, worked with our learned from are:

Tadisha Yamishita aka Black Star Ninja from American Ninja.  Met him in 2003 and at age 50 something that guy is still a bad ass.  I think he was in the Octogon as well.Met Steve Lambert

who coordinated POW Escape, Revenge of the Ninja and American Ninja.  Very nice guy.  And there have been many more.

I attached a picture of me and my stunt coordiantor from my new feature.  You should of seen the look on the faces of the stunt guys when I showed up that day with a Cannon shirt....hahaha.

Thanks for the contact Mark, it’s always great to hear from Cannon fans! I get lots of emails and if anyone has something you’d like to share with other Cannon fans please let me know.

WHY DO YOU RUN GIANCARLO?

Added a Giancarlo Parretti page (Cannon in The News section) with lots of news articles and a letter from Mr Parretti himself. If you’d like to add something to that page or correct something please let me know.

20+ new scans added to the Cannon Netherlands Gallery -All those Netherlands/Belgium scans are –again- from Dan (you can see his blog here (lots of great Vestron material there)). –Thanks, Dan

DON’T SELL DRUGS*  *unless you’re the CIA

Richard Roundtree doing a video intro for Crack House (1989) which was passed by the UK censor and shown before the video tape and then we get the Cannon logo.

I assume this intro was also shown at cinemas and in other countries. YouYube clip here  Now, if they’d only gotten Michael Dudikoff to do the intro

CANNON NETHERLANDS –NEW GALLERY

click for larger image

Uploaded a new gallery for the Netherlands (and some Belgium covers too). This gallery was only possible due to the very kind scan donations from Dan who done a load of work so we can all enjoy these great covers. Big thanks, Dan!

Dan also sent some Disney/Touchstone covers which will get their own gallery soon hopefully (all Gallery scans are repeated in the Cannon Film A-Z IMDb & Image Gallery too so you can click on IMDb info –if there’s something missing LMK).

ROY SCHEIDER DIES AT 75, RIP  11 February 2008

Sad news this great (and very memorable) actor best known for appearing in Spielberg’s 1975 film, Jaws. Appeared in Cannon’s 52 Pick-Up (1986) of course.

More news here and Roy’s filmography on the IMDb is here

NETHERLANDS/BELGIUM CANNON

Lots more great Cannon scans from Dan (some of the best Cannon scans I’ve seen in fact). Will be making a start on getting those added to the site in the next week. Thanks Dan.

Added UK scans

Click for larger image

Finally (thought I dreamt it) found Rescue Me (1993)  for the UK rental market. Added to the Cannon / Warner (Cannon Pictures) UK gallery and the Cannon Film A-Z IMDb & Image Gallery  (mind ALL home video scans are repeated there)

THORN-EMI CANNON

Cannon bought Thorn EMI’s entertainment divisions but I’d never seen both logos together until now. 2 VHS tapes from the Netherlands feature both:

If you’ve seen the Thorn-EMI logo and Cannon logo together somewhere else I’d like to know about it, thanks.

GODZILLA –WITH BOXING GLOVES!

It Ate Cleveland . Another film to be added to the “Cannon, Could Have Been” section (which I’ve not finished!). Spider-Man will be there too which is already on the main menu). It Ate Cleveland was to be filmed in MONSTERVISION which sounds interesting!

Thanks to MightyMcT for the image.

Mr Duck.

Bet you never thought you’d see that logo on a Cannon site? As Menahem would say, let me tell you, Dan from Belgium kindly sent over this brilliant Cannon Disney scan of a VHS tape:

Click for larger image

Dan has sent several great scans (including a Death Warrant (1990) scan confirming –again- DW was a Cannon film) from the Netherlands and Belgium and they’re so good they deserve their own gallery. I’ll do that soon and also add everything to the Cannon Film A-Z IMDb & Image Gallery.

Thanks again to Dan.

 HOT LASERDISC

click for larger image

Lemon Popsicle 3: Hot Bubblegum (1981). Long before DVD (and when Betamax was dying and VHS was the number 1 home video format) people also bought Laserdiscs and CED discs.

Never bought any myself  (apart from this one for £4/$8) and I can’t play it as I don’t have a player. Just thought it looked cool. Added a couple

more pictures to the Cannon/Rank Video gallery (Rank handled the original UK VHS/Beta too –which I’m looking for if you can help (either one is fine)).

SUPERSIZE HI-RES #2

Schizoid (1980) [51mb] front cover on Rapidshare here (scroll down and click the "free" button). I'm after the full Rank Video cover for this (Betamax or VHS) if anyone has it LMK.

Cannon Start

Cannon’s original owner, Christopher C. Dewey's Fury on Wheels (1971) gets a mention with its own page under Cannon’s Friedland & Dewey.

YouTube

Found an alternative promo (with Cannes mentioned in the background) for 'We're Cannon Films & We're Dynamite'' promo. Posted on YouTube here New videos too from Hokushin and an alternative late 1980s version of the well known logo with cannon fire.

Added VHS scans:

A Man Called Sarge (1990) (Cannon Video, UK)

Mascara (1987) (Warner-Cannon, UK)

Red Riding Hood (1989) (Warner-Cannon, UK)

Street Knight (1993) (Warner-Cannon, UK)

Volunteers (1985) (Cannon Screen Entertainment, Germany)

Storm (1987) –UK VHS scan

Interesting little film. More info from David Winning, the director here  This film was picked up by Golan-Globus/Cannon and they paid for extra footage to be shot.

Added the Cannon German VHS scan for Amsterdamned (1988) . Scotia-Cannon handled this in German cinemas.

Cannon -Always thinking BIG -when finances allow.

I was checking a few facts about the UK publicist mentioned on Cannon's The Ambassador (1984) and found that the company Rebel Films were a small concern and they even built their own cinema. That was also small.

The Black Torment (1964). Robert Hartford-Davis's Compton Films/Tigon film appeared with the Scotia-Cannon's logo on Intercontinental/Mike Hunter. I think this is when Cannon held the Compton Films/Tigon rights (including Polanski's Cul-de-sac and Repulsion) which were eventually sold off when the Cannon Group sold off their Cannon Screen Enterrtainment assets. How this Tigon film (and a few others) appeared on Mike Hunter (who seems to specialise in soft-core porn so they suit Compton Films well) I don't know. If you have info about that let me know.

VHS TRAILER TAPE IN FRANCE

Don’t recall these in the UK (must have been something similar for trade.business) except for a video version of  We’re Cannon and We’re Dynamite

WALKER, CANNON GERMANY

Added a page in the Cannon Home Video Galleries. Interesting that all 3 releases feature the Cannon name and logo.

CANNON –THIS IS WHAT WE’RE MISSING!

click for larger image

What's Missing?

Is there a title missing from the Cannon Film A-Z IMDb & Image Gallery? Especially home video as Cannon Video may have released other distributors' stuff.

If there is (even if you're not sure!) please let me know. Always looking to make these lists as accurate as possible so. Thanks.
