Had seen The Fourth War (1990) listed as a Cannon distribution in a few places but never had any photographic evidence. That’s the US one sheet

cinema poster. Not a Cannon Releasing Corporation film but Cannon Pictures’s Cannon Releasing. Complete with daft logo.

A mediocre film which was passable when I saw it in 1991. I did try watching it again (HBO VHS) but turned it off after a few minutes.  VHS is so difficult

to watch now so I’ll maybe try again if I get a DVD. It’s had a few releases on DVD, including this one from Belgium.

Stars the late great Roy Scheider of course. If you happen by any of Cannon Pictures’s promo material for this please get in touch, see the Contact Me

page on the main menu

I mentioned a few weeks back that POW:The Escape (1986) had had a UK DVD release as Attack Force ‘Nam. Released by a company called

Video International. I took a little look at it, what a mess. Only good thing is it's all region so will play anywhere (although it's so bad you'd be

better with a VHS). All the original titles have been ripped/remove or covered over. The transfer is truly awful. Look at the state of that menu!

This has a had a few name including Behind Enemy Lines but it’s always been POW:The Escape (1986) to me and that’s how it was released in US

and UK cinemas.

I suppose this is what happens when nobody cares about a film. At least we have the MGM/UA UK VHS double-sided cover here and here

Stick with the VHS I think.

Intrada has issued the special edition of Brian May’s soundtrack to Missing in Action 2: The Beginning (1985) http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.5888/.f?category=-101

Pretty interesting OST CD from the guy that also did Mad Max I believe. Some track samples on that link above. Coming in at 70 minutes also makes this fairly definitive

I’d say. Well worth the investment for fans.

Intrada also did an excellent Invasion USA (1985) OST.

Comfort and Joy (1984), West Germany, another great Cannon-VMP tape. Love these boxes.  Part of the former Cannon Screen Entertainment

catalogue. Directed by Bill Forsyth (Local Hero, Gregory's Girl and the intended Cannon production Housekeeping, (1987)) and starring

Bill Paterson, Clare Grogan & the late great, Rikki Fulton.

Now on DVD in the UK from StudioCanal. I actually seen this at my local cinema (Thorn-EMI distributed it). It’s was enjoyable enough

at the time but watching the DVD decades later I found it to be rather poor. Nice DVD transfer so it’s worth tracking down if you fancy

watching the film. Comfort and Joy (1984) @ the IMDB http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0087072

FREE NINJAS!

I see MGM has released the Cannon classic Enter the Ninja (1981) in the USA. And it’s free to watch as long as you are in the USA (don’t know

about Canada). From their site www.mgm.com/title_title.php?title_star=ENTERNIN or direct www.hulu.com/enter-the-ninja

Strange that MGM  haven’t done a DVD of this but it could be due to rights issues. MGM and Vivendi own petty much all of Cannon’s back catalogue

and they’ve released a couple of other Cannon films for “free” too. Franco Nero and Shô Kosugi for free? Whatever next!

Watch the Enter the Ninja (1981)  trailer free also, and you can watch it anywhere as it’s on my YouTube here www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxW6Be76-XY

I wonder how many repeat fees the director Menahem Golan gets from this as it’s “free”?

THE DON

                                    Don Lafontaine (1940-2008)

3 September, 2008.

Just read the very sad news that Mr Don Lafontaine has died http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/09/02/ST2008090202776.html

DON LAFONTAINE, VOICE OF MOVIE TRAILERS, DIES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Don LaFontaine, the man who popularized the catch phrase "In a world where..." and lent his voice to thousands of movie trailers, has died. He was 68. LaFontaine died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from complications in the treatment of an ongoing illness, said Vanessa Gilbert, his agent.

LaFontaine made more than 5,000 trailers in his 33-year career while working for the top studios and television networks.

In a rare on-screen appearance in 2006, he parodied himself on a series of national television commercials for a car insurance company where he played himself telling a customer, "In a world where both of our cars were totally under water..."

In an interview last year, LaFontaine explained the strategy behind the phrase.

"We have to very rapidly establish the world we are transporting them to," he said of his viewers. "That's very easily done by saying, `In a world where ... violence rules.' `In a world where ... men are slaves and women are the conquerors.' You very rapidly set the scene."

LaFontaine insisted he never cared that no one knew his name or his face, though everyone knew his voice.

LaFontaine went on to work in the promo industry in the early 1960s. As an audio engineer, he produced radio spots for movies with producer Floyd Peterson.

When an announcer didn't show up for a recording session in 1965, LaFontaine voiced his first narration, a promo for the film, "Gunfighters of Casa Grande." The client, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, liked his performance.

LaFontaine remained active until recently, averaging seven to 10 voiceover sessions a day. He worked from a home studio his wife nicknamed "The Hole," where his fax machine delivered scripts.

LaFontaine is survived by his wife, the singer and actress Nita Whitaker, and three daughters.

His funeral arrangements were pending.

Nicolas has very kindly sent me this great scan for the very rare French tape Rottweiler: Mission Tuer AKA Dogs of Hell (1982) or  Rottweiler: Dogs of Hell. I don’t recall watching this

film and I note it was shot in Future Dimensions 3-D®. Definitely one of my favourite home video covers. From director Worth Keeter and featuring the producer Earl Owensby who’s

Blast Off (1967). Found this interesting Harry Alan Towers production (Towers produced several Cannon films) on USA VHS. Nice to see a

US tape well looked after since it’s not a carton style. Was released as Rocket to the Moon (1967) in the UK. Not seen it in years and I think

it was on TV in the 80s.

CANNON DUNDEE

One of my regular cinemas I used to visit was the Cannon Dundee (Seagate / Gellatly Street). Sadly, never thought to take a photograph of it. The date it was a Cannon was 1986-87 as I recall seeing a teaser

poster for Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). Funny how I never took photos of things back then (this was long before digital photography). It makes me admire even more the people who had good sense

to archive these buildings.

If you know of any photos with the Cannon logo please get in touch and I’ll add it to the cinema gallery. Thanks.

If have tried to contact the owner of that 2nd photo (1996), Norrie McNamee, but I’ve had no reply. Thanks again to Martin for allowing the use of his photo.

Another old Cannon distribution appearing on a 50 MOVIES! pack. This time it’s the turn of Daniel J. Vance’s  The No Mercy Man (1973). Released by Cannon in US cinemas, then renamed

Trained to Kill U.S.A. and released on US home video by Paragon and the film returned to its birth name for several DVDs from www.millcreekent.com Only thing of note for this film is it features the

great Sid Haig from House of 1000 Corpses  The original UK home video release was from Intervision and then later released by Kestrel as “Fire in The Wind”. No sign of Cannon with those releases

AFAIK, but Cannon did make an appearance in Spain as El Hombre Sin Piedad Wrongly (unless you have better evidence than the US poster above) listed as a Golan-Globus production in several places.

LONG LOST CANNON

Ever seen that? Robert Guralnick’s Mustang: The House That Joe Built (1978)  isn’t listed in many places as Cannon but that’s the evidence needed for this site. It’s getting a DVD release too. It’s

actually a documentary about a legal brothel and it’s a well put together film. Very watchable, I’ve definitely seen it before, not sure where but it must have been on UK TV.

From Shock Cinema:

MUSTANG: THE HOUSE THAT JOE BUILT (1976; Shocking Videos).

Long before pay-cable stations like HBO jumped on the sex-documentary bandwagon with fare like REAL SEX and TAXICAB CONFESSIONS, this deliriously grubby feature was a revelation -- a no-holds-barred glimpse into Nevada's most infamous, legal, around-the-clock brothel. Located 15 miles East of Reno, the Mustang Ranch was a bunch of fenced-in trailer homes, Joe Conforte was its head honcho, and director Robert Guralnick doesn't shy away from the business' most prurient elements.

But the biggest surprise is that this ultra-sleazy, "you'll-need-a-shower-afterward" flick was actually nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Documentary! Guralnick first spent several months at the Ranch, so everyone would be comfortable with his presence, and filmed most of it with his own handheld camera. We begin by meeting the Mustang's female stable, with names like Chi Chi, Libra and Buffy, who discuss the pros and (extreme) cons of their occupation. Amidst loads of casual female and male nudity, they explicitly describe how to pleasure a john, dance and party in the Mustang's faux-wood-paneled parlor, give us a glimpse of their pathetic living quarters, and stand in a bikini line-up as the drunk-off-their-ass, in-bred, blue collar clientele chooses amongst them.

Guralnick even convinced one sorry customer to allow a camera in the room: from the strip down and genital wash-up, to more ugly business than you'll want to witness. Meanwhile, Sicilian Conforte (who looks like he tumbled straight out of A BRONX TALE) sucks on foot-long cigars, spins tedious stories about his life, predicts that most of the country will follow his legal-prostitute lead in 10 to 15 years, and firmly believes this movie will jump-start that social change! So while his working girls beat off repulsive customer for a lousy $20, Conforte (a genetic mix of two other Joes: Pesci and Franklin) gambles, parties, brags, and wildly spends his cash, almost as if he didn't actually earn it himself. Go figure. (Not surprisingly, only 4 years later Conforte fled the country in order to escape tax evasion charges.)

In a bizarre turn, some of the soundtrack music was provided by Carmine Coppola, with plenty of pop tunes sprinkled in along the way. If you're looking for an upbeat take on prostitution though, go find a copy of THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS instead, because this is a terminally depressing portrait. The women gamely attempt to put a positive spin on things, but all of 'em look vaguely beaten up by life, as Guralnick captures their tedium, hopelessness and exploitation. If you've never had the pleasure of visiting the Mustang Ranch, don't worry; you'll feel like you've spent a long weekend there once this 82-minute film is over.

Thanks to Mark Burger for the newspaper clipping.

GRACE

I like that take on Grace Quigley (1985) from Spain (I think). The US one sheet is nice but it doesn’t sell the film very much. See the IMDb A-Z for other artwork.

TOO SHORT, 1986

Review from the January 1986 Films and Filming where the reviewer (David McGillivray) talks about the false New York locations shot for Death Wish 3 (1985) in London.

Move a few weeks forward…

The set constructor (I assume) later wrote to the editor to complain.

I’m told David McGillivray later withdrew his comments after a chat with the film’s star.

I see that review talks about Cannon and L'Amour a Mort I’ve seen a few mentions of that elsewhere but never found much of a connection.

BANNED BY  PART II

YouTube has again removed one of my trailers, this time it’s John Derek’s Bolero (1984). Deemed inappropriate for viewing due to sexual content. I suppose it’s slightly raunchy but if we can look at

death, robbery and everything else life throws at us, on YouTube, I’m not sure why we can’t look at a ‘sexy’ film trailer. There’s not that many places to host this type of material as the better known

sites censor very heavily if they think it is ‘sex’. There are sites but they really do feature adult material.

Are they saying Golan-Globus were trying to sell us sex? As if they would!

Available on DVD from MGM in a few countries.

CANNON MEDIA

No, not a VHS or Betamax tape but a V2000 tape from Cannon West Germany (there was 2 Germanys when this was released of course). Comparison to a VHS tape here V2000 was a complete disaster

for its designer, Philips. The tape could actually be turned over so you could play the other side. More info on V2000 here

Another strange home video format Cannon appeared on was CED (Capacitance Electronic Disc):

More info on the CED format here And size comparison with VHS here

I’ve seen a few Cannon films on VCD but not HD-DVD (was there any?) or Blu-Ray (yet). Blu-Ray of course is like Laserdisc, but less popular.

Mark Burger kindly sent over this press pack from the US for Appointment with Death (1988). I think it must be the smallest (140mm x 210mm) press info pack I’ve ever seen. Very nice item though, thanks.

Mark also sent over another tranche of great clippings which I’ll be making my way through and posting here when time allows.

Strange little film documentary I was sent. Richard Winer’s The Devil's Triangle (1974). Not sure how or why Cannon had control of this in the USA (released by MGM/UA home video).

I watched it and there’s a lot that rings a bell. It certainly felt like I’d seen it before somewhere. Just over 50 minutes and narrated by Vincent Price (creepy as ever) where we’re told all

about the Bermuda Triangle  The Devil's Triangle (1974) @ the IMDb here

LEMON POPSICLE UK BOXSETS –CANCELLED

Almost all of JEF Films's catalogue (they had 2 or 3 pages of stuff  (including  2 Lemon Popsicle (4 + 7 DVD releases) boxsets) has been removed from  HMV.com. Some of these were listed as

‘exclusive’ on HMV but they do appear elsewhere. Another company whose logo appears on these DVDs is called Black Horse Entertainment www.blackhorseentertainment.com (dead website

but apparently owned by UK home video wholesaler S. Gold and Sons www.sgolds.co.uk (who have stopped trading)).  One of their releases are still on Amazon UK www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000YNJRG6

Image of that page here in case it disappears.

Shame we’re not getting the UK boxsets but if they were legitimate releases then hopefully someone will buy those S. Golds & Sons rights and release the DVDs (which must have been boxed and ready to go as

they were due to be released early this month).

Is this the same JEF Films from the USA?

                                                                               company website logo

www.jeffilms.com (not working as I type) has been accused in several places of selling films where they do not own the rights. Many of these films come from the old Cannon catalogue (much of which is now

owned by Vivendi-Universal).

….and breathe…

On the subject of Lemon Popsicle, you’ll find one from the series below where I talk about Prime Time (1977).

Anyone remember this? Watched it last night (good cast including Warren Oates, Joanna Cassidy, Harry Shearer) and thought it was quite funny. Very 1970s low-budget humour which works well

as there’s a lot of thought went in to it. Released in the USA as Prime Time (1977) and the UK through Cannon on Rank video as American Raspberry. Not much info out there on the director,

Bradley R. Swirnoff. I do recall seeing his other film Tunnel Vision which was very similar I think. Excellent info on the film www.badmovieplanet.com/unknownmovies/reviews/rev37.html (I’ve archived

that page in

case it disappears).

Not sure who owns this now (looked like Warner when I dug around but probably sold off by Cannon in a bulk sale). It can be apparently legally downloaded if you’re in the USA. And it’s had the

dreaded 50 MOVIES! treatment in a 12 DVD boxset Drive-In Movie Classics from www.millcreekent.com (direct link here ) in North America. I would assume all discs are Region 0.

Available from the usual places including www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=721992

That 50 movie set also has several old Cannon releases like Lemon Popsicle 2: Going Steady (1979) and Savage Weekend (1979).

If anyone can help with a scan of any of the releases (especially the UK Rank cover) or have something to add please get in touch. See the Contact Me page on the main menu

Another great clipping from Mark Burger, this time from the Newark Star-Ledger , we have the very classy and enjoyable 52 Pick-Up (1986). Starring the late great Roy Scheider, Ann-Margret and the

scene-munching John Glover. Director John Frankenheimer made the classic The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and I reckon 52 Pick-Up (1986)  is his 2nd best film. Great thriller.

King Solomon's Mines (1985), Polish style. If you think that’s strange you’ve seen nothing. Of all the countries I’ve looked at, Poland has its very own style which I think is usually horrible to

look at, more often than not indescribable and generally disturbing. Interesting maybe, but not pretty. One Cannon Polish poster I do like is Pirates (1986) but don’t think comedy means they hold

back on the strong images, see MGM’s Revenge of the Pink Panther to see what I mean.
