Never know why DVD distributors don’t either buy the rights or copy/honour superior original artwork. I know which one I prefer.

CANNON, COULD HAVE BEEN

PAUL SCHRADER'S INVESTIGATION

 -A review by Kent Church

Paul Schrader

Kent Church has written a review of Paul Scharder's Cannon planned project from 1987 which was to be helmed by Andrei Konchalovsky, director of Runaway Train (1985).

I love a lot of Paul Schrader's work and after reading his script and Kent's excellent review I think  we'll never really know what sort of film we'd of been given by Cannon.   With the combined talents

of  Schrader, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Andrei Konchalovsky we could have had a real cinematic treat. We could only of  hoped for the freedom given to the makers of the classic,

Barfly (1987).  We’ll never know of course. Cannon, Could Have Been. If you’d like a copy (for educational use only) of Schrader’s script, see the Contact Me page on the main menu

Approx size 40" x 30"  / 1010mm x 760mm.

Go-Glo Music -Found a new Cannon company and I can only assume it stands for errr.. Golan-Globus Music.

It's mentioned in Over The Top (1987) , Fool For Love (1985), New Year's Evil (1980)  (end titles: "Available on Cannon Records") Alien From LA (1988) and Breakin' (1984). Seems to be

controlled now by Sony and WB Music.

CANNON DVD WATCH  -BERNADETTE

Jean Delannoy’s Bernadette (1988)

Released on DVD in the USA/Canada by some sort of religious concern, Ignatius Press. There’s an interesting interview with the star Sydney Penny @ www.ignatiusinsight.com/features/spenny_bernadette_dec04.asp

I’ve never actually seen the film (or the follow-up –which I know nothing about and it seems to have no Cannon connection).

BROKEN LINK

Anyone remember Link (1986) starring Elisabeth Shue amd Terence ‘General Zod’ Stamp? I didn’t have very many memories of this

apart from I thought it was poor. Decided to watch it again to see the differences between the USA/UK cut and French cut.

Enormous differences surprisingly!

USA/UK

France

Timings:

UK/USA version: 103mins, 18 seconds

France version: 110mins, 16 seconds [PAL speedup taken into consideration]

The French version starts in the science lecture theatre (image above with three people trying to remove the chimp –no that’s not the producers trying to get the editor out of the editing suite)

completely removing the scene featuring clips that are in all trrailers and the important opening that gives the UK/USA version of the film its tone:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Not in the French version

I gave up after 20 minutes comparing because I saw over 15 changes in that short period. Some really silly stuff like when Stamp leans into the cage to tighten a bolt –we see the

bolt being tightened in the French version but no bolt tightening UK/USA version -and it feels like it’s been removed. Some very poor editing in the UK/USA version. Worse

than the editting is the audio track as it’s very poorly dubbed and they’ve obviously cut corners in post production. The French cut doesn’t have this problem as it’s in French only.

Interesting little film if you like apes or Shue but not much for anyone else.

Nice.

INTERVISION UK RENTAL

Intervision were a great UK video distributor and one of the first video brands I really noticed. They did some great home video covers

They distributed Cannon US/UK product in cardboard cases (or “cartons”):

Cannon productions:

Fury on Wheels [AKA Jump] (1971)

Happy Hooker, The (1975)

Happy Hooker Goes to Washington, The (1977)

Joe (1970)

Maid in Sweden (1971)

Scratch Harry [AKA The Erotic Three] (1969)

Who Killed Mary What's 'Er Name (1971) [as Death of a Hooker]

Cannon distributed/presented in the USA (Canada also?):

Alaska Wilderness Adventure, The (1978) (through Cannon-Happy Distribution)

Silent Night, Bloody Night (1974)

Northville Cemetery Massacre (1976)

Slumber Party '57 (1976)

No sign of “Cannon” on that 2nd lot from what I’ve seen so far. I don’t have any large Intervision covers yet so if you have one LMK. I don’t know for sure if  Northville Cemetery Massacre (1976)

was co-financed by Cannon (it’s listed as such in a few places –see the filmmaker’s comment to on the UK VHS tape image) but I had a look at the UK VHS rerelease (which still has a bit of the Intervision

logo just before the film) has no sign of Cannon anywhere.

If you can help with any Intervision scans please get in touch: See the Contact Me page on the main menu

CANNON FRITZ

Very interesting Cannon cover for Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1941). Oddly it looks like it’s from 1986 (when Cannon controlled the film to an extent (some versions were/are public domain)) but it doesn’t

have the correct video certificate which should have been issued. This is with the assumption this is a UK release. There’s nothing about this to say it isn’t. Do you anything about this release?

I’ve not seen many “Cannon Classics”. If you have seen any other than The Deer Hunter (1978) please get in touch. Especially if you have some scans!

CANNON GOOD NEWS

From June 1987’s Films & Filming magazine:

Sounds terrible.

CANNON LINKS

Still not finished my links page yet so I'll post some interesting (I hope) sites with links to Cannon:

István's (who has contributed to cannon.org.uk) Cannon site http://cannonfilm.extra.hu It's in Hungarian (of course) and is an ongoing project but it's looking very good. It's nice to see Cannon fans from around the world

and I'd say 90% of my mail box is from people who don’t have English as their first language.

chucknorris.com -He knows if you DON’T visit and even if you just hover over the link.

donlafontaine.com –Mr Don LaFontaine™ Cannon movie trailer regular and Presidential candidate. He’s done at least 15 Cannon trailers. If anyone has the full figures let me know and I’ll post them

cannonfilms.com –Another fan site and worthy of the logo.

www.dudikoff.de  Well put together site. Available in German and English.

www.michaeldudikoff.net  It’s official.

Mr Golan liked novels. A lot. I’ve been collecting books Cannon made in to films and this is one of the first I’ll be posting, Menahem Golan’s Cannon classic The Magician of Lublin  (1979). I’ve

not seen this for at least a decade and will try to rerwatch it again soon.

FIRST EVER CANNON LOGO?

Scratch Harry [AKA The Erotic Three] (1969)

We have a new logo.: ”CGInc” from the preview one sheet USA poster for  Scratch Harry (1969) I’m doing a Scratch Harry page (which was released at UK cinemas in the UK as “The Erotic Three”)

and came by this little poster as part of a New York  promo from Cannon when they resided in New York City. I have seen other one sheets of the film but not with that logo. Maybe they

never used it in the end or something? Any info? LMK.

If you have anything about Scratch Harry (1969) you’d like to add to the page please let me know. I’d particulaly like a VHS cover from any country. I think it was released by Intervision in the UK

under its original name.
