GALGENVÖGEL VOM 27. PANZER STRAFBATAILLON!

–that’s known as “Wheels of Terror” or “The Misfit Brigade” so how come Germany get such a cool name? It’s so good I don’t want it translated.

Thanks to Tobias in Germany for these great scans:

OVER THE TOP –OST surprise

Don’t worry, that’s not me! I decided to take a listen to the Over The Top (1987) soundtrack CD as I liked that song and tune in those Cannon promo trailers

and the whole album’s very good. A bit 1980s for sure (reminded me of  Willaim Freidkin’s To Live and Die in L.A.) but still a top notch listen and  highly recommended.

The main song of course is from Sammy Hagar with Winner Takes It All here

Check out the trailer which has a few tunes in it. Also have a look at the German Over The Top (1987) trailer here It’s interesting as it’s got a different tone to anything

I’ve seen so far. I enjoyed the music so much I’m going to watch the film again –it’s been 2 decades!

“Over the top, Dad!”

Finally found the original UK home video of Griffith’s interesting little film with Oliver Reed. Added to the Cannon Rank Gallery & A-Z. Note the Cannon logo is

wrongly mirrored. Rank did this again at least once.

I’ve posted a Cannon quote from Griffith in my  What Did You Say? Various Quotes section.

NEW SCANS / CANNON EVIL BAD HAIR AWARD –POSSIBLE CONTENDER

click for evil image          The Godsend (1980)

I wasn’t sure if this little girl could be nominated for the evil hair award because there is no such category. Looking at the VHS cover from Rank UK she

does look odd. Not evil.

Other nominations for Cannon Bad Hair:  Charley Bronson  Got any more?

RARE CANNON

click for larger image                                                                      click for larger image

I try not to use the word “rare” but these certainly are. Especially that Norwegian cover of Raoul Ruiz’s Treasure Island (1985) featuring Martin Landau and a very

young Melvil Poupaud . The film and all information about it seems to have fallen off planet earth. Corleone (1977) is another Cannon distributed film which can be

easily bought on DVD but it’s the Cannon artwork which is rare. A massive thank you to filminteressert and Lazer for these great scans. Added to the A-Z IMDb.

FINLAND, DENMARK, NORWAY, SWEDEN –NEW GALLERY PLANNED

I’ve received so many brilliant Cannon images donated from these great countries they deserve their own gallery. So if you’d like to add some please get in touch.

You can upload images to http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com (email me the links) or email the images if you prefer. If the images are very large it’s usually best

to send them one at a time. Email if unsure.

See the Contact Me page on the main menu for my email.

GRANDE POSTER

click for larger image

Strange poster from France. For the excellent 52 Pick-Up (1986) with the late great, Roy Scheider.  Posters released in France are of the size known as

“grande”. Sized at approx 47" x 63" (metric approx: 1.2m x 1.6m). More about European posters @ www.moviepostercollector.co.uk/eu_posters.html

CANNON / NEW WORLD -The Boys Next Door (1985)

click for larger image

That’s a really nice bit of artwork from the UK quad poster. A “quad” poster is 40” x 30” (“=inches”) or in metric, approx 1010mm x 760mm. Cannon distributed some New World

Product in the UK at the cinema including Black Moon Rising (1986). Black Moon Rising (1986) made it to Cannon Screen Entertainment home video but The Boys Next Door (1985) didn’t and ended

up with CBS/Fox. Cannon’s home video division (Cannon Screen Entertainment) was sold off. Other titles include The Quiet Earth (1985) (again moved to CBS/Fox). You’ll find

a page on TQE on the main menu. If you have any info on Cannon/New World please get in touch.

I’m going to get some better pictures of my posters and make a new gallery. The posters were all folded (UK posters always seem to be -messy) so I intend to flatten them a bit and then roll them. Easier

to store and view in my opinion.

CANNON / 21ST CENTURY

Thanks again to videohunter, this time for these 2 great Japanese VHS covers (so good I think they deserved to be framed).  Added to the Cannon A-Z IMDb.

Not many films have a Cannon/21st Century (Golan's company when he left Cannon) connection but Devil Master (1977) was originally distributed by 21st and

we see it get a Cannon badge in Japan.  Can only assume Cannon controlled that catalogue for some time.

BARFLY MULTIREGION

Australia OOP DVD

Looks like people are now paying US$90 dollars for the OOP Warner Barfly DVD www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000696I5

The DVD is encoded for several Regions incidentally including Region 1, 4 and Region 2. Or at least my DVD is! Barfly (1987) was handled by Warner on home video

in most places but those rights have reverted to Cannon (MGM). MGM have released the DVD in a few places but not Region 1 yet. Someone’s went to the bother

of starting a petition www.petitiononline.com/a8d8f877/petition.html  Why not buy it somewhere else much cheaper? Places I’ve seen it in Denmark and Greece.

Extras on the Region 1 (2 + 4) North American DVD.

Review of the North American DVD www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReview/barfly.htm

Review of the Australian DVD www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ID=5446

Obviously, if you want those extras it’ll have to be the North American DVD. I assume Warner own all those extras so even if there is a new DVD MGM

may not want to pay for them.

Anyone seen other releases of Barfly (1987)? I was told there was a 2 DVD MGM set from Brazil or Mexico with another Rourke film (Desperate Hours),

but I’ve not see anything to confirm this.

Easiest and cheapest place to get this is eBay and there’s people on there now selling the Greek version and that 2 DVD version. Just search worldwide.

BLOOD BATH (1976)

UK VHS                                                 Joel M. Reed

Cannon released Blood Bath (1976) at the US cinema (was released on home video through Rank in the UK) but I’ve never seen a poster. Anyone got an image of the poster?

There is a restored DVD reviewed @ www.dvdmaniacs.net/Reviews/A-D/blood_bath.html Anyone got that DVD? DVDManiacs say it has a “reproduction” of the poster.

Can you help with an image? Please get in touch.

Came by 60 (!) Cannon posters. I have no space for them but I’ll have to find it!

Will have to investigate a very large (40”x30” / 1000m x 750mm at least) scanner  (sounds expensive) so I can get them uploaded.   Anyone know anything

about such a large scanner? Like to donate one to the site?

Big thanks to petcor80 for a couple of great VHS covers including the Dutch Schizoid (1980) and  Ten Violent Women (1982)

I’ve added them to the A-Z IMDb and they’ll be added to the next major update of the Netherlands/Belgium Gallery. Thanks!

IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME!

No idea what that says exactly (anyone translate literally?) but it translates perfectly into Death Wish II (1982) -which is a helluva surprise as I have never known

DWII to appear anywhere with a Cannon logo. I’d heard of it (see post at bottom of the page) but never seen any real evidence.

You can see it in it’s full glory :

An enormous thanks goes out to videohunter for his kindly allowing me to use it on this site.

Only problem is I’m going to have to change the About This Site page as I wrote in there DWII would not be appearing here

BARFLY / LOVE STREAMS –donate images to the galleries

Can you help with images for these 2 great Cannon films? Covers scans, posters, articles, promos or something you’d like to share.  Anything would

be gratefully received. Thanks!

SUPERMAN IV –donate images to the gallery

I’ve been intending to do a Superman IV (1987) gallery but it’s no pleasure as it brings back memories of the awful film. However, it’s getting its own page

as I like looking at images so if you’d like to email me something for the gallery please do. Any image or text you’d like others to see or read. Thanks!

SUPERMAN BAD OMEN?

Home video artwork from Germany -click for larger image

Superman III (1983) is a dire film. Maybe Golan-Globus didn’t know just how bad  it was (did they even know they owned some of the rights to Superman III?)

and that’s why they went for another Superman? With terrible results.

BRUT'S MACHO IMAGE GOES 'OVER THE TOP'.

Faberge helps sponsor new Sylvester Stallone movie

Date: September 12, 1986

Faberge is hoping that men will try to get as much machismo from a bottle of Brut as Sylvester Stallone projects in his upcoming movie, which the company is helping to sponsor.

Faberge expects to boost its $75 million Brut sales volume by $12 million to $15 million with its advertising campaign tied to the movie, according to Daniel Manella, Faberge chairman.

Could we have a look at your folder please Mr Tibor? This great image (and more) was very kindly sent by István. The image is from a Hungarian

book "Filmcézárok - Menahem Golan birodalma" (literal translation "Movie Caesars: The Empire of Menahem Golan"). I'd like a closer look of that

catalogue! I put a page with a few pics inside the  Menahem Golan & Yoram Globus section. -Thanks again to István for the information and images.

TCM2 GALLERY IS GO

Managed to get this started. You’ll find it in  Film & Image

Enormous thanks again to Gerlinde for the great Germany DVD scans. Thanks also to www.texaschainsawmassacre.net

for the kind permission to use their clippings about TCM2 and MightyMcT for the “Year of Cannon” TCM2 image.

There’s still lots that could be added (it would be nice to get some high quality scans of the USA/Canada VHS releases

if anyone can help). If you have anything you’d like to add just get in touch via the Contact Me in the main menu.

WE'VE GONE ON HOLIDAY BY MISTAKE

click for larger image

Added Withnail & I (1987) to the Cannon A-Z IMDb and Cannon-Warner Gallery. Cannon hanlded Withnail & I (1987) and released it on VHS rental  (I’m still after that cover if you have it) and sell-through.

Cannon fell out with George Harrison’s Handmade Films and there was a court case and a counter case. From what I can tell (information is very limited) Handmade hadn’t been paid for something (and had

tried to cancel their contract with Cannon) and they eventually lost out badly as they lost some of their film catalogue. I recall Cannon selling off some of their rights and that’s why so much Handmade

product is almost invisible on home video. Not that Handmade needed Cannon to argue with as they argued within themselves, with the partnership eventually collapsing and being sold off. Their film catalogue

is so fucked up, their films appear free in newspapers here in the UK or to download free from Channel4 VOD. I suppose that’s better than no releases/”lost” films but not very good for the people who made

the film (I saw Richard Griffiths (Uncle Monty) getting interviewed and he was asked why he'd not recorded a commentary track for the Withnail DVD and he said "Because they refused to pay me". Good point. I

don't know how these "free" DVDs work (every week in the UK in all the newspaper you get a free DVD actually inside the paper) but there can't be much in it for the creative people who actually made the film.

As for Cannon and Handmade, Cannon’s logo still appears on some of their films.

Few pictures from the film here including the classic (and beautifully composed) photo with Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and “I” (Paul McGann) –as used above, in the original UK cinema release artwork, by Cannon at least

twice and of course, Anchor Bay UK in their DVDs.

“THEY'RE NOT GOING TO GET CHARLEY BRONSON!”

Brilliant interview here with Menahem Golan. For a minute, I thought he was going to say Let Me Tell You™. It's a great 8½  minutes and I could listen for hours

to the guy as he obviously knows his stuff. I've been looking for articles on Golan and he's got a lot of interesting things to say and people did listen. I would like

to add more on Menahem so if you'd like to add something to this site get in touch.

JCVD is Go!

I managed to eventually start the Jean-Claude Van Damme Cannon Gallery.  Like to add something?

I'm looking for a UK Warner Home Video scan for Bloodsport (1988). Big box/exrental only, which seems a bit rare. Anyone help with that? A good quality scan is fine.

Also, I've added a Bloodsport (1988) DVD screengrab gallery but I don't own Cyborg (1989), Kickboxer (1889) or Death Warrant (1990) on DVD -so if you would like to do screengrabs

(easy with VLC or whichever player you use) then I'd appreciate that and add a thank you to the page. All I need is the images (your favourite 20 or 30 images from the film is fine)

unless you want to do the webpage too. You can upload screengrabs or scans to  http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com  You can also email me them too but make sure they're in

small quantities or email can't cope. If you’d like to add any other image just let me know. See the Contact Me page on the main menu for my email.

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 –DONATE SOME IMAGES!

I’m close to finishing my TCM2 gallery so is there something you’d like to add to it? Anything, video covers, articles –anything you think we’d all like to see/read.

DEATH WISH 2 –MAYBE CANNON AFTER ALL.

Always looked for something to completely link this to Cannon (apart from Golan-Globus of course) but never found anything. Came by this image

from Greece featuring Mr Bronson and that logo. I can’t confirm it as it’s difficult to search in Greek script. Can anyone confirm this Greek VHS, got

a bigger image or the release company? I know the Greek VHS has always been known as the only truly uncut DW2 (longer even than the “uncut”

new European/Australia DVDs) but wasn’t aware of the Cannon link. For those that can search in Greek script you’ll no doubt be aware of www.google.gr

PIGS

Strange little number from Cannon Japan called "Pigs" or Daddy's Deadly Darling (1972) http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0070537 No idea how Cannon got their name

on this in Japan and the only links I can find are that Japanese company also distibute some very old 21st Century (see main menu) stuff under Cannon and Paragon

(who distributed Cannon product in the USA). There's a few DVDs kicking about and you can read about the Troma release at www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=15875

I’d like a larger scan of that Japanese VHS if you have one! If you have more info on this release LMK.

GRACE QUIGLEY / THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION OF GRACE QUIGLEY UK DVD

Grace Quigley (1985) There’s a Region 0 (plays on any PC or DVD player (with PAL output or NTSC conversion)) DVD of this in the UK under the name

The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley”. According to the IMDb  Originally released as "Grace Quigley" in 1984 at 102 minutes; later cut to 87 minutes. The alternate and

re-edited version, titled "The Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley" has been prepared by screenwriter A. Martin Zweiback and runs 94 minutes.” I recall there being 2 versions

but not a fan of the film so never watched it all. Might rewatch it again . As for the UK DVD it’s a very nice image and I’ve added screengrabs of it in the main menu under  Screen Grabs.

AUSTRALIA HIGHLANDER + TCM2

click for larger image

Nice to see StudioCanal/Universal getting the titles correct on Highlander (1986). Not very good artwork though. See this fanart for something far more worthwhile.

Those terrible censorship labels in Australia and New Zealand really do destroy their covers. Bad enough in the UK but those long banners really take the piss

out of film fans.

Which reminds me, I’m intending to do a The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) page on the fact it was banned on video here in the UK (and elsewhere) which meant

I never watched it (yes, I could of imported it but I wasn’t having that). I have recently purchased the Gruesome Edition and look forward to seeing it. If you have any

images or text about TCM2 you’d like to add please get in touch. See the Contact Me page on the main menu

QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER (1990) –FINAL GERMAN CANNON?

click for larger image

I think this is the last scan I have to add for when “Cannon Entertainment” changed to “Pathé Entertainment”. The name/logo of Cannon almost disappeared

(only to reappear as Globus’s project “Cannon Pictures”) and what was left lingering in Germany for several home video releases.

The other titles I know of are:

Company Business (1991) scan of cover here

Death Warrant (1990) scan of cover here (also appeared with Cannon in the Netherlands here and Norway here and of course there was also a Cannon trailer)

Not Without My Daughter (1991) scan of cover here

Russia House, The (1990) scan of cover here

Quigley Down Under (1990) scan of cover here

I reckon Thelma & Louise (1991) was caught up in the Cannon/Pathé change too (see the French cover here with “Pathé  Entertainment” but no sign of Cannon).

If you’ve seen it somewhere with Cannon LMK.

Got any information or a correction? Please let me know See the Contact Me page on the main menu

AMERICAN CYBORG: STEEL WARRIOR (1993)

I’ve added another great review (Cannon Film Review/Comment) from Nathan Decker’s www.millionmonkeytheater.com This time he analyses Cannon’s American Cyborg: Steel Warriror (1993)

This looks like it was partly shot at Golan-Globus Studios (like so many late Cannon) in Israel. I see “GG Studios” at the end of many of their films from Cannon Pictures. I assume that stands for

Golan-Globus. If anyone knows exactly which films were shot in Israel please let me know. You can even do a webpage on it if you like. No technical website experience required -I manage fine :p

I’ve been after a USA/Canada VHS cover of this for the gallery so if you can help please get in touch.  See the Contact Me page on the main menu

DANCERS (1987)

Whatever happened to this film? Finally found a UK VHS scan (thanks to David P.). I reckon this was part of the 12½ year deal the Cannon Group made with Warner. That period

is now over so not sure why Dancers (1987) hasn’t appeared on DVD. Not a particularly good film (although it needs rewatching after 2 decades) but it has its fans and a following.

MR. BOOGALOW and THE COUSINS

Had a very nice email (I like emails so don't be shy if you have something to share!) from David del Valle who worked with Cannon. David is also a producer and author outwith his

experiences with Cannon as a script reader (which he talks about in his article). Some of David’s work is on the excellent film site www.filmsinreview.com and he tells me they’re

compiling a book of their reviews to be titled "A Collection of Memoirs About Hollywood and The People Whose Dreams Never Quite Reached Their Idealized Horizons" –sounds like a good read!

David has kindly allowed me to republish 2 of his artilces (in the Cannon Film Review/Comment section). They're in two parts, first A CANNON-BURY TALE and then still linked to

Golan-Globus we have an excerpt piece (DO THE BIM) about Vladek Sheybal from Menahem Golan's The Apple (1980). The entire Vladek Sheybal article (JUST BE THE BITCH…DARLING)

is available to read too and I'd implore you to read it as it's worthy of your time if you just like reading about the real stars of film or film in general.

If you’d like to relive the glory of Menahem Golan’s The Apple then catch the trailer on YouTube here

I had heard of Mr Sheybal but was not aware of his full talent and body of work.   –thanks, David

DON’T FUCK WITH BARBET!

No, not the blond haired doll but Barbet (pronounced err… Barbie) Schroeder -director of Barfly. Amusing quote:

“When Cannon failed to sign an agreement that was key to the deal, Mr. Schroeder apparently walked in to the company's

Hollywood office, carrying a Black & Decker portable saw, a bottle of Novocain and a needle, and threatened to cut off

The Wicked Die Slow (1968) –Directed by William K. Hennigar. Stars Gary Allen, Steve Rivard and Jeff Kanew

This is a new Cannon title to me. Rank Video handled the UK VHS/Betamax but I know nothing else about it so far. If you have any info please let

me know. See the Contact Me page on the main menu

I’m still looking for people to send me stuff (from anywhere in the world) so don’t be shy! See the Contact Me page on the main menu

I’m always looking for scans of covers, posters, press kits, newspaper articles or anything you think other people would like to read or look at about Cannon.

What's Missing?

Is there a title missing from the Cannon Film A-Z IMDb & Image Gallery? Especially home video as Cannon Video may have released other distributors' stuff.

If there is please let me know. Always looking to make this archive as accurate as possible. Thanks.
